I love so much of what goes into the movie making process and especially just being on set. If you look closely you can see that every link wants to be the strongest. Every aspect, direction, photography, sound, lighting, costumes, makeup, art, has a team of people working on it and their goal is perfection. So much goes into making "the talent" look their best. You think it's the acting that makes a movie good but if all of those other elements are not in sync it can be disastrous. The film, Lilith, is a low budget indie feature. This means that people aren't there for the paycheck but instead for the love, the art, the true passion. Every person on set wants their part to go smoothly. At one point, I had sound putting the mic on me while the wardrobe assistant was tying my necklace perfectly and another assistant was buckling my shoe. The director pulled me aside to let me know what to expect for the next scene. The Director of Photography talked to me about the lighting and body position. We discussed the use of props and the blocking and we were ready to roll, literally.
It really is amazing and if you've never been on a set, it's something to see. The crew was fabulous. I found everyone to be pleasant and I was so impressed with the level of professionalism and dedication.
About the location... we were in a big house, in Shaker Heights. We referred to it as the bi-polar house. In some ways it was amazing and others, kind of shabby. Working toilets were a rarity and doors that closed properly were also scarce. There was a maids quarters but not like you might imagine. Then there was a kitchen that was gorgeous, out of a magazine, beautiful. There was no real furniture to speak of, other than a dining table that was exquisite and the rest was all toys and dusty furniture. The home couldn't decide if it wanted to be elegant or run down. Either way, I loved that I got my own room where I could eat my veggie quiche or granola in the morning, while waiting for makeup. I also loved working in an environment that was so intriguing with another room around every bend. It was a maze and amazing.
Other than the fact that they didn't provide much vegetarian options for craft services and I went rather peeless for the three days I was there, the experience was the absolute best. One thing I learned, solidified, confirmed, decided ... say it however you will, is THIS is what I want to do. I love my career. I love acting. I love the hard work and dedication and I would go without peeing for a month to do it all again! OK, that sounded severe but you get my point!
